Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) by SorbiTech Group

Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) is a microporous carbon adsorbent engineered for Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) nitrogen generation. The narrow pore structure separates nitrogen from oxygen in compressed air by kinetic selectivity, delivering high purity nitrogen continuously across long bed cycles.
SorbiTech Group supplies CMS to PSA plant operators, industrial gas companies, and PSA system manufacturers worldwide. Each CMS batch is manufactured to ISO 9001:2015 standards with direct engineering support for grade selection, vessel sizing, and bed loading across the full lifecycle.
How CMS Drives Nitrogen Generation Inside the PSA Cycle

CMS is the core adsorbent in PSA nitrogen generators. It works by kinetic separation, selectively adsorbing oxygen and trace components from compressed air while allowing nitrogen to pass through as the product gas.
The separation depends on rate rather than affinity. The micropore structure is engineered so that its pore openings sit between the effective sizes of the two molecules, which means oxygen diffuses into the pore network far faster than nitrogen does. Within the short time an adsorption step lasts, oxygen uptake is high and nitrogen uptake stays low, and it is that difference in adsorption kinetics, rather than any difference in how strongly either gas is held, that produces the separation.
In a typical two tower PSA system, one vessel produces nitrogen in the adsorption step while the other regenerates by depressurization and purge. A pressure equalisation stage transfers gas between the towers before each switch, recovering work that would otherwise be vented. The valves then switch the flow to keep nitrogen production continuous.
Inside the vessel this behaviour appears as a mass transfer zone, the moving band where oxygen is actively being taken up. Even bed loading keeps that band flat and predictable. Channelling caused by uneven loading lets untreated air slip past it, and nitrogen purity falls at the outlet.
A consistent grade supports shorter, stable cycles and steady nitrogen purity, which improves nitrogen recovery and reduces operating issues across long runtimes. A pore size distribution that drifts between batches is what turns a settled cycle into one that needs constant adjustment.
Why Engineering Teams Choose SorbiTech Group

Choosing the right adsorbent decides how a PSA system performs across its whole service life, not only on its first cycle. Every SorbiTech Group grade is produced under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, which governs how each batch is checked for consistency before it is released. Engineering support covers grade selection against your flow and purity targets, loading method and bed support, and interpretation of performance once the unit is running. Send your system details and you receive a grade recommendation with the reasoning behind it.
